Barbara Bosland Zerby
I was the first in my family to attend college and I graduated from William Paterson in May 11, 1963. Daddy always said girls went to college to get their MRS; however I assured him that was not the case. However, I met David Zerby at a Young Christian Workers meeting when I was a ‘Junior’ at W.P. Shortly after I graduated we were married August 24, 1963 and I relocated to Boston where David worked for Bradlees-Stop and Shop in South Boston. I worked as a Social Worker in East Boston until our first son, William David IV, was born in February 1965.
David took a job with Holly Stores / S.S. Kressge in NYC in 1966 switching from retail to computers. We returned to New Jersey and rented an apartment in Lyndhurst, so David could have an easy commute to NYC. James Taylor was born June 1968. It was in Lyndhurst that I got involved with the Jr. Women’s Club. I learned Braille and translated books and worked on projects for St. Joseph’s School for the Blind.
In May 1970 we moved to our first home in Maywood. It had been the scene of the one & only murder in Maywood - certainly a conversation starter for years to come. Holly Stores had evolved into K-Mart and David managed and implemented their computer departments in NJ and nationally. In town David got involved with the Special Police, Ambulance Squad, Knights of Columbus, and Boy Scouts. I got busy with PTA and the Women’s Club. This time I joined the drama department and with them won best director, best play, best actress and best supporting actress in the NJ state competitions. Robert Edward was born in July 1972 and completed our family. Of course his birth also forced us to move. But Maywood is such a great little town, we just moved down the street to a bigger house with a bigger yard for the boys.
I didn’t go back to work until 1983. At that point I began working part-time at Parkside Montessori School, a private school in Montclair. The school has moved around a bit but I am still there 3 days a week and love it! The rest of my time I spend reading, gardening or doing puzzles of all kinds. David worked for K- Mart for 18 years, did consulting work for AT+T, and American Systematics for another fifteen years.
Our lives changed drastically in the late 70’s. David was physically healed by the power of God. We became born again at our Catholic prayer group. We later joined the Assembly of God to expand our ministry involvement and horizons. David became a deacon and I taught adult ‘Sunday School’ and led the Women’s Ministry Group. I also taught a home Bible Study group for 13 years. David graduated Berean Bible College and became a licensed / ordained minister. We made missionary trips to Mexico, Canada, Peru, and Africa. We presently minister as Associate Pastors in Hackensack. David ministers in the Bergen County Jail and Good Shepherd Mission in Paterson.
Our boys are grown. Bill and JoAnn have three boys - 2 in college, 1 in Manchester High School. Jim owns a home in North Haledon and Bob lives in Clifton. David and I would like to retire but life is so full now and it’s hard to know where. We continue to wait on God and give Him all the glory for what we do.
