Born in Westwood N.J. Moved to Waldwick at 13 went to Waldwick grammar school and then one year to Ramsey HS. Boring place to be and always fights in the halls. Had to ride bus to and fro.
We were seldom allowed out of the yard. I played baseball on the corner of Franklin turnpike and Prospect Street with a gang of kids. Broke an Insurance business's window with a home run hit through 1st and 2nd base. Everyone ran and told me I had to go get the ball. So I walked over to the place and asked them if I could have the ball. They wanted to know who hit the ball through their (larger than life) window. I told them it was me, They told me I didn't.....and I said yes I did, I'm left handed at baseball and it was my best hit ever. I offered to pay for the window, if they would give me a job of cleaning or something. He said to forget it and gave me a ball and a pat on the back with a smile on his face. I still don't think he believed me. I loved baseball.
1956...we moved to Midland Park and my life finally started. What a friendly place to live.
We then took a train to Pompton Lakes HS for one year. That was fun. There were so many twins at Pompton Lakes Sophomore year. That is when I realized that it was hard for people to tell us apart. That is Durita and me. That was the first time I ever traded a class with Dee. I was doing terrible in typing, although I loved it. I asked her if she would like to see what typing was like...since it was so hard for me, I figured she would do better. I took her art class. That was difficult cause I didn't know any one in her class. She had been working on a head sculpture. Oh my GOD, I didn't know the first thing about clay except that it dried without water. I sat for 20 minutes looking at it and finally took out all the marbles she had put in holes after the teacher asked me what am I doing just staring at my work. Dee was totally upset with me I ruined her art work. I heard about it for quite a while. So never changed classes again.
Married in 1959 and moved to Paterson N.J. which was boring and lonesome. We stayed there till 1960 and then Joe had a chance to relocate with his company in Delaware.
We had become friends with Phil and his wife. It was a short lived friendship because of the move. Kind of lost touch with everyone. Dee kept up with people, I was the loner.
Raised our first Jersey Girl in Delaware and she then acquired a brother and sister in DE.
Start doing art work, made cards for family and hand colored photos in 1964.
In 1970 We bought our farm down here in Harrington. We are so far out from the city that we have a Felton Phone # and a Harrington address. Like it that way.
I baby sat for a few years.
1978 Started College and loved it. Also got a job as a Newpaper Reporter Photographer. Love that too. Kids grew up and were in high school. Oldest had graduated.
1977 went to Photography club, Art League. Got awards at both.
1988 started College to become an Art Teacher. Graduated.1990. Had art work in year book. Didn't know it though since I wasn't going to invest money on year book. Went and bought one when one of my art cronies told me I was in the book. They should have told me but didn't give credit to works they used.
Never went into teaching...didn't like their discipline. So taught privately to students, taught at Art League, Senior Centers and to the Handicapped. All very challenging. Even Mentored for a year at a High School.
In 1978 we put up our first Chicken House, and have been growing for Perdue since. Taken several awards and ribbons. Still doing it. It is a challenge for sure.
